Lynn Stern, the convention-defying, New York-based, American photographer, has pushed the boundaries of photography during her 47-year career.  Her work is intimately tied to the history of the photographic medium through her innovative use of natural light, still life, and large-format cameras and film. The works in the Obscura Gallery exhibition, Echoes of Light, are luminous examples of her innovation. Within her own studio, with natural light and the use of a scrim, she manipulates the intentionality of her subject matter by hiding parts of the objects and giving an illusion of transparency that accentuates and/or highlights the light infusing them. Historically, with still lifes, whether photographed or painted, the subject is often the light in accordance with the objects' reflection of it. Uniquely, however, in the Quickening and Force Field series in particular, Stern is highlighting only the edges of her objects with a stroke of a shadow on a white background. “Her innovative use of light results in a resemblance to charcoal drawing – if you didn't know she was using a camera to make these images you might assume she is using pencil to draw in the highlighted edges on a white sheet of paper,” says Owner/Director of Obscura Gallery, Jennifer Schlesinger.
